Ever since the Widebody package was unveiled for the Hellcat, it has been one of the most desired options. And it’s not surprising considering just how much of a visual difference it makes in the direction of making the Hellcat look even more aggressive while at the same time keeping its retro styling uncompromised. But the visual improvement is only a part of the story. The extra fender flares also call for a wider track and wider tires giving the Hellcat more traction all around which is always welcome in a rear wheel drive car with enough power to spin its wheels at up to 80 mph. The extra traction also makes the 2020 Challenger SRT Hellcat Widebody somewhat safer than the standard model, and also more fun to drive when the roads become anything other than straight. Also, Dodge introduced a major update for the Hellcat a year earlier which noticeably changed the exterior, introduced new software, and added a bit more power. But before we start breaking down the 2020 Hellcat Widebody, check out the ones currently for sale here at Exotic Car Trader.
Barely any other car caused such a shock to the car industry as the Hellcat, at least in the past decade. Once it began hitting the front pages it almost never stopped until near the end of its life cycle. And it’s all down to the original and its 707 horsepower which shamed most supercar and hypercars of its generation. And just as the dust settles, Dodge pokes the Hellcat with a stick for a new benchmark of 840 horsepower, all of which culminated with the Demon 170 with over 1,000hp putting it among the most powerful production cars ever made. Dodge also made sure to keep the rest of the car interesting by introducing new updates every two years with the most notable one coming in 2019. At the same time, the Widebody trim was introduced which made the Hellcat even more over the top. That makes the 2020 Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye Widebody one of the most advanced and desirable models as it includes all the notable updates before the model was retired in 2023. As of now, Dodge will not be making a new Hellcat or even a Challenger unless it switches ownership.
The most notable interior change for the 2020 model year is the addition of stitches around the gauge cluster and on the door trim. But that was only available for examples optioned with the leather packages. The extra stitching definitely makes the interior feel a bit more luxurious although it’s a shame it wasn’t included with all models. That said, the 2020 Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye Widebody didn’t lack interior options. Customers could choose from fabric, alcantara and leather in various different colors and material combinations. So, regardless of what you prefer, there is almost certainly a Hellcat out there that will meet your criteria. And as of 2019, all Hellcats include a new line lock to preserve the rear brakes while doing a burnout, plus launch assist which prevents wheel hop for more consistent acceleration. Other than that, the Hellcat’s interior didn’t change much over the years, but the exterior did.
The 2020 model year didn’t bring that many changes to the exterior either, but the 2019 update did. All Hellcats made after 2019 can be recognized by a new dual intakes hood which is reminiscent of those found on the 1970 Dodge Dart and 1971 Dodge Demon. The hood worked wonders for the Challenger as it was another retro design cue that blended perfectly with the rest of the car. It also had a much simpler design than the old single intake hood further improving the exterior’s timelessness. The 2020 Challenger SRT Hellcat Widebody then introduced new wheels. They were still double five spokes but more concave and the fact they were wider than those on the standard Hellcat further improved the exterior. As for the Widebody trim, as always, it adds an extra 3.5 inches to the overall width with the help of aggressive fender flares. Coupled with the old school front splitter and the Hellcat looks more well rounded than ever.
Following the 2019 update, all Hellcats got an extra ten horsepower giving the 2020 Challenger SRT Hellcat Widebody a total of 717 HP with 656 lb-ft of torque. As always, the power goes through the rear wheels only giving the rear tires quite an abuse. The Widebody however, gets 305 section tires in the rear instead of 275 which helps with both acceleration and cornering. Thanks to the extra rubber, the Widebody sprints to 60 in 3.4 seconds instead of 3.6. The wider 1.6” wider track at the front and 2” wider in the rear improves the lateral grip as well from 1.66 to 1.7. However, the wider body does hurt the already poor aerodynamics so the Widebody has due with only a 196 mph top speed instead of 199, but who will notice that in the real world. The Widebody weighs about the same as the standard Hellcat at 4,500 pounds but the standard six piston brakes and 15.4” floating rotors do an excellent job of grinding it to a halt. Overall, the difference between extra grip the Widebody gets is definitely enough to make a difference and improve the driving feel.
With a starting price of $68,000, the 2020 Challenger SRT Hellcat Widebody cost around $5,500 more than the narrow body models. Today, however, the price gap is closer to $10,000, sometimes even more. In 2024, a Widebody Hellcat with low miles and in original condition goes for anywhere between $60,000 and $70,000. Judging by the recent sales, the prices seem to be increasing over the past year, but that shouldn’t come as a surprise just yet.
As far as standard Hellcats go, the 2020 Challenger SRT Hellcat Widebody is one of the best and well equipped model years available. Not only does it get all the major updates and technology, but also more power and the most up to date styling. At the same time, the Widebody improves the handling giving the driver more control over the car and more fun.
