The Lamborghini Reventon is a whispered legend, a phantom on wheels. Witnessing its sculpted perfection will undoubtedly leave you speechless even though it takes after the Lamborghini Murcielago, hence why it's sometimes referred to as the Lamborghini Murcielago Reventon. Once spotted, the Reventon leaves a mark on any enthusiast's heart, hoping they'll get to see another again someday. Should you decide to plunge yourself into the market in search of one, $2.0 million should have owners talking. However, money alone won't buy you a Reventon. Obtaining a Lamborghini Reventon hinges on chance due to its limited production numbers. Add to that the reluctance of owners to release their highly coveted masterpieces. Refocusing on the car, the design team taking the lead on the Lamborghini Reventon remarkably took inspiration from the F-22 A Raptor combat jet. Its sleek and stealthy appeal exemplifies the electrifying performance readied underneath by a 641-horsepower ear-piercing V12. The interior adopts stealth styling similar to the exterior, with the dull color options giving the feeling of being in a pilot-focused cockpit. Subtle changes from the Murcielago's interior, such as the updated instrument cluster, further accentuate the Reventon's fighter plane-inspired design. Is the $2 million Lamborghini Reventon a dream Italian bull or a collector's folly? Read on and decide.
A few cars will go down in history as some of the best from the early 21st Century, and the Lamborghini Murcielago is one of them. Its head-turning design continued to evolve throughout its production run, most notably in the Murcielago LP640 unveiled in 2006. But the Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 wasn't just about aesthetics. It packed a serious punch with a new 6.5-liter V12 churning out a whopping 640 horsepower that Lamborghini would then use in the Lamborghini Reventon a year later in 2007, and it was a quantum leap beyond the Murcielago LP640. Retaining only the engine, designers went back to the drawing board. On the design desk, there was probably an F-22 A Raptor model from which the Reventon takes its style, angular with sharp lines. During its unveiling at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show, Lamborghini described the Reventon as the most extreme of their models, showcasing an aggressively innovative style. Stephen Winkelman, Lamborghini's CEO, expressed that designers at the Lamborghini Style Centre in Sant'Agata Bolognese, which is where the Reventon was made, took the technical base of the Murcielago LP640 and compressed and intensified its DNA, its genetic code. Despite being instantly snapped up by eager buyers, Lamborghini confirmed production would be limited to just 20 Reventon examples, 10 of which were delivered to the United States. Each example symbolized extreme exclusivity yet offered the extraordinary performance that made the Reventon so unrivaled. A roadster variant of the Lamborghini Reventon would be unveiled later in 2009, with production limited to 15 units each based on the Lamborghini Murcielago LP 670-4 Superveloce.
Powering the Lamborghini Reventon is a 6.5-liter V12, which Lamborghini revised from the 6.2-liter V12 engine in early Murcielago models with a larger bore and stroke, tweaked valves, a new intake system, and lighter and less restricted exhaust system. The result from the revision was 640 horsepower and 488 lb.ft sent to all four wheels via a 6-speed automated manual transmission, commonly known as the e-gear transmission. Inheriting the powertrain and drivetrain of the Murcielago LP640, the Reventon mirrored its blistering performance. Both sprinted from 0-60 mph in a neck-snapping 3.4 seconds and flirted with 211 mph top speeds, figures likely unchanged even today thanks to Lamborghini's renowned build quality. Despite its dramatic design shift, the Lamborghini Reventon remained as light as the Murcielago LP640, tipping the scales at 3,671 pounds thanks to its carbon fiber construction, shared with other Murcielago models.
Like the exterior, the Reventon's interior is infused with the same innovative design philosophy. Its blend of leather, Alcantara, aluminum, and carbon fiber is meticulously distributed to give the cabin a unique ambiance that almost feels like an airplane's cockpit. The seats are lined with black leather with military green-ish Alcantara inserts, which is not only for style but also for comfort and support as Alcantara is grippier than leather. The steering is also wrapped in Alcantara, and behind it, carbon fiber paddle shifters and an instrument cluster milled from a solid aluminum block surrounded by an exposed carbon fiber casing. The Alcantara, in a shade similar to that on the seats, flows seamlessly onto the lower half of the dashboard, door cards, and center console, cocooning the occupants in a performance-oriented embrace. A final flourish of exposed carbon fiber across the top of the center console reinforces the Lamborghini Reventon's unwavering focus on the driving experience.
In their review, Top Gear stated that there has never been a non-tractor Lamborghini that was anything other than visually stunning as the Lamborghini Reventon. Modern aeronautics were the inspiration for its sharp and angular design, which is plainly distinguishable from the Lamborghini Murcielago in a side-by-side comparison. Unmistakably unique, the Reventon remains a singular creation unlike any before or after, earning its place as one of Lamborghini's most iconic designs. All its body panels, excluding the doors made out of lightweight steel sheets, are made out of carbon fiber of a similar grade as the base model Murcielago, but every proportion is sculpted to be more angular, hence its fighter plane demeanor. Lamborghini didn't just design a beast; they dressed it like one. The Reventon comes cloaked in a bespoke "Reventon" paint that resembles matte green/grey with metallic particles that give the paint depth in the daylight. But despite boasting an extreme and innovative design, the Lamborghini Reventon doesn't abandon Lamborghini's form, which follows function ethos. It pushes the ethos further with improved aerodynamics and airflow management, boasting better engine cooling, improved air intake, and enhanced brake cooling. Just like the Lamborghini Murcielago, the Reventon flaunts its batwings (engine air intakes) on the rear quarter panels, which open and close, adjusting air intake depending on the engine's needs. And, of course, it wouldn't be a Lamborghini without the dramatic scissor doors adding their own theatrical touch.
The Lamborghini Reventon's technology not only manifests itself underneath its body but is also visually embedded in some intricate details of its exterior and interior. Starting with the exterior, the aluminum wheels, made explicitly for the Lamborghini Reventon, have exposed carbon fiber fins screwed onto the spokes creating a unique visual effect and, most importantly, cooling the massive carbon ceramic brakes hidden behind the wheels. Each headlight incorporates seven LEDs acting as daytime running lights, a first for Lamborghini. The taillights were also updated, featuring Y-patterned LEDs, a design that would later be implemented on the Lamborghini Aventador and other Lamborghini models. Inside, Lamborghini upgraded the Reventon's instrument cluster with three TFT liquid crystal displays resembling a fighter plane's slight displays with innovative, customizable display modes. An F1-style G-force meter display, also a first for Lamborghini, is incorporated into the instrument cluster's center, showing dynamic drive forces and longitudinal acceleration during forward acceleration and braking.
With only 20 examples produced, the Lamborghini Reventon's scarcity significantly inflates its price. Scarcity fuels demand and exclusivity, making it a collector's item that exchanges hands for figures not less than $2.0 million. The lowest recorded sale was at $1.8 million, and due to its demand, the Reventon's price is expected to appreciate over time. This makes it a potential investment if you are into the car collection and selling game. But it's not until you get a hold of one that you understand why owners are reluctant to sell.
