In 2015, BMW launched the M4 GTS, describing it as a technological showcase that elevates the potential of the M4 Coupe to an impressive new level. Considering what the car offers, that almost feels like an understatement. It was designed with a concept similar to the BMW M3 GT, M3 GTS, and M3 CSL, resulting in a track-focused road car with the looks to match. The distinctive wing and eye-catching orange details reveal it as anything but a typical M4, and the driving experience is miles apart. The car also debuted with new tech, which we'll touch on as we go on. First, how much horsepower does the 2016 BMW M4 GTS have? Also, what are the performance differences it has compared to the standard M4 or M4 Competition?
Sitting underneath the 2016 BMW M4 GTS hood is a 3.0-liter inline six, making just shy of 500 horsepower and 443 lb.ft of torque. That's nearly 80 horsepower and 50 lb.ft more than the standard M4, but BMW didn't stop there. When the engine is above 5000 rpm, water is sprayed directly into the intake plenum, evaporating instantly and cooling the intercooler. This results in more consistent power delivery, which is handy on the track. Without water, the engine would make around 444 horsepower. Plus, thanks to the use of more carbon fiber, the M4 GTS weighs lighter, tipping the scales at around 3,300 pounds, which is 150 pounds lighter than the standard M4. Back to the usual now. 0-60 mph takes around 3.7 seconds, and the top speed maxes out at 190 mph, which could be more, but that's more than enough to leave your arm hairs tingling after a run.
The 2016 BMW M4 GTS's performance-driven focus is evident in its cabin. Replacing the carbon buckets in the M4 competition are hardcore race bucket seats made of carbon fiber and wrapped in leather complemented by Alcantara inserts. They are supportive and comfortable, but there's no way you'd last driving long distances in them, especially considering that they are not adjustable. Plus, they don't include heating or cooling. The Alcantara continued to the steering wheel for more grip, and the doors adding a sportier accent. The only thing lacking are multi-point harnesses to make the car a full track car as it doesn't even have rear seats. BMW replaced them with a roll cage and a fire extinguisher, which are fully justified.
You can easily tell a 2016 BMW M4 GTS from a crowd of M4s thanks to its more aggressive styling and, as mentioned earlier, distinctive orange accents. However, BMW didn't only enhance its aesthetic. The body panels are made from carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic, improving weight reduction and rigidity. The multi-position-adjustable front splitter is more pronounced, enhancing the car's aerodynamics. BMW also added a wing for the same purpose. All these generate significant downforce, specifically 63 pounds at the front and 210 pounds at the rear when the car is driving at 186 mph. This is in no way related to the visual appeal, but the drive shaft is also made out of carbon fiber. Interesting, right?
BMW designed the 2016 BMW M4 GTS with performance-maximizing features. For example, the 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission was re-tuned to provide shorter gear ratios and quicker shift speeds, and the brakes came standard with carbon ceramic discs. Additionally, the driver assists, such as launch control, were re-tuned to suit the engine's increased output. Last but definitely not least, the suspension, which also includes adaptive dampers, has adjustable M coilovers specially tuned for the M4 GTS. OLED headlights and headlights might be on a lot of BMWs today, but they debuted on the 2016 M4 GTS, offering better light intensity than the older LED lights. There's more, but let's move on to pricing.
BMW made 700 M4 GTS examples, 300 of which were sold in the United States, and the MSRP for those was approximately $135,000. Today, a 2016 BMW M4 GTS will set you back anywhere between $60,000 and $100,000 depending on the car's mileage, spec, and condition, among other factors. The 2016 M4 GTS is where BMW took performance to a whole new level with track-ready engineering for a driving experience perfect for the road or track. It's basically built for excitement, and given how rare it is, it's a unique part of BMW's history.
