You can only get the 2023 M2 as a Competition, meaning the M240i is the only other 2 Series M car you can get since BMW hasn't yet given us the M2 CS. But if an M2 isn't in your sights or it's just an alternative, then the CS might not be relevant to you. The 2023 M240i xDrive, despite being a lower-spec model, has its perks. It's not as fast as the M2 Competition but feels just as fast despite having less horsepower. And thanks to all-wheel-drive, it feels more planted and is a better daily driver and all-weather car than the M2 Competition, which you can't get with xDrive. The only downside is that you can get the 2023 M240i xDrive with the 6-speed manual transmission. Let's see what it's made of under the hood.
The 2023 BMW M240i xDrive comes with the same 3.0-liter straight six as the M2 Competition but with one less turbocharger. Power is a decent 382 horsepower and 369 lb.ft. Nonetheless, driving one will feel like it has more power, especially when launching it, thanks to the all-wheel-drive system. 0-60 mph, as tested by Car and Driver, takes 3.6 seconds, which is nearly a whole second quicker compared to what BMW advertises. Flat out, the top speed maxes out at 155 mph, which is not much, but knowing that it's most likely electronically limited, it could be more. The all-wheel-drive system can be fun or grippy when needed, but its biggest drawback is that it adds quite some weight to the car since the 2023 M240i weighs 3,877 pounds.
Inside, the 2023 BMW M240i xDrive may not have a flashy or heavily performance-focused cabin, but it is both sensory and aesthetically pleasing. The M Performtex seats are comfortable and supportive without causing discomfort down there, like the ones in the M2 Competition. Soft-touch plastics and brushed metal accents complement the leather, giving the cabin a premium feel befitting a BMW. Although the 2023 M240i xDrive has rear seats, practicality has never been the 2 Series' strong suit. Oddly, BMW increased the G87's exterior dimensions without expanding the cabin size. However, the trunk is spacious enough for your cargo needs, whether you're doing a grocery run or packing for a trip.
There's a noticeable contrast between the 2023 BMW M240i xDrive and the M2 Competition. The M240i xDrive borrows design elements from the F87 2 Series, with a slight facelift and added bulk. For example, the front bumper lacks the sharp lines of the M2 Competition, and the grille closely resembles that of the F87 2 Series. Although blacked-out grille surrounds and side vent inserts would have added a sportier touch, the chrome ones aren't overly disappointing. The added bulk gives the car a wide stance, enhancing its sporty appeal, but this doesn't extend to the rear end. The fake diffuser is unappealing and would look better if color-matched to the rear bumper. Additionally, the fake chrome exhaust tips don't quite hit the mark.
Consistent with its other 2023 2 Series offerings, BMW enhanced the standard equipment package for the 2023 M240i xDrive in 2023. One of the major highlights is that BMW included an M Technology Package for the M240i and M240i xDrive with larger brake discs, an optimized cooling system for the engine and charge air cooling. The cabin features a dual-screen setup with a 12.3-inch infotainment display and a customizable 14.9-inch digital instrument cluster. Both run on BMW's iDrive, allowing intuitive touch and voice controls to adjust climate, seat and steering heating functions. Ambient lighting is also standard; even during the day, it gives the cabin a warm appeal. Underneath, the M-Sport suspension, standard across all 2 Series variants, gives the M240i XDrive superb handling. However, some models were specced with the optional Adaptive M chassis with variable sport steering for even better handling.
The 2023 BMW M240i xDrive offers better value for money than the 2023 M2 Competition. Priced around $50,000, it's approximately $15,000 less than the M2, allowing for potential upgrades with the savings. The 2023 BMW M240i xDrive may not match the M2 Competition's power, but its balance of speed, all-wheel-drive control, and daily drivability make it worth considering. Its held-back design and comfortable cabin are also perks, even if you can't fit all your friends in it.
