Two years after launching the F22/F23 2 Series, BMW introduced the M240i to complement the M2 in the 2 Series lineup. This left buyers spoilt for choice since both had an inline-six engine and since it wasn't possible to know which one had a single turbo setup and which one was twin-turbocharged purely from the looks, the masses ended up falling for both. The M2 attracted performance purists, while the M240i appealed to those looking for an engaging drive with everyday usability. Only hardcore gearheads knew that the M240i had the very much adored B58 and the M2 had the fresh N55. Like today's M240i, the 2017 BMW M240i feels better to drive than the M2 to some extent, and we'll tell you why next.
James May once said something along the lines of driving a slow car fast is often more thrilling. Now, the 2017 BMW M240i is not slow in any way, with a 0-60 mph time of 4.3 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph. It's just that it's not as fast as the M2, which has a beefier drivetrain, contributing to an overall more precise ride. Driving both, you won't even feel a major difference except in situations requiring superior handling, such as on the track. On regular roads, the M240i feels better and more comfortable to drive. Get one with a 6-speed manual instead of the 8-speed automatic transmission, and you'll smile as you shift through the gears. It may seem odd to conclude with the power figures, 335 horsepower, and 369 lb-ft, but when you're in the driver's seat, it's the performance figures and driving experience that matter.
When new, the 2017 BMW M240i was cheaper than the M2, and one of BMW's cost-saving measures involved using less expensive materials for the interior. This means the cabin has more hardcore plastics than softy touch finishes, and amenities are relatively limited. Nonetheless, it's still functional, offering room for four, but the rear passengers will have to get out and stretch during long drives due to limited legroom and headroom. On the bright side, BMW was generous enough to include a glass sunroof as standard, and if buyers didn't want it, for weight-saving purposes, among other reasons, it was a no-cost delete option. Other amenities you get in the cabin include but are not limited to powered front seats, multi-zone AC, and remote locking.
It's fair to say that the 2017 BMW M240i doesn't possess the bold visual flair expected of an M car; however, the M2 from the same year is in a similar boat, so it's not something to criticize. The only giveaway that it's an M car is the rear badge and the M wheels, which sometimes can be found in a lower-spec BMW 2 Series. Nevertheless, the car's compact design gives you a blank canvas to play with. A wing and a front splitter are among the most common first mods after deleting the chrome grille surround. The rear doesn't look so appealing, especially with the tiny dual exhaust tips that betray the engine's character.
Being a first-generation model, the 2017 BMW M240i doesn't have the latest and greatest in tech. However, it has everything you need plus a little bit extra. If you love an uncluttered cabin, you'll enjoy how clean the cabin is, with the only major highlight being the 8.8-inch infotainment display on the dash. The only downside is that it doesn't have Android Auto or Apple CarPlay unless the original buyer optioned the car with the Latter. The instrument cluster comprises a set of gauges we miss seeing in cars since almost every car manufacturer, BMW included, is going for digital displays. Some of the safety and driver assist features to expect include electronic stability control, traction control, ABS, curtain and front airbags, parking sensors, and braking assist.
A 2017 BMW M240i is one of the best cars you can buy for around $25,000. It's fun to drive and decently economical; plus, it doesn't take much to make it look fresh, even among new cars.
