Recently, Porsche unveiled the Porsche 718 Spyder RS, which in all its glory is among the best Boxster models. However, it has its shortcomings, for example, the manual roof that can take forever to put together when opening and closing it, and it's also bloody expensive for a Boxster. However, for slightly less than a hundred grand, you can get the Porsche 718 Boxster GTS 4.0, which has an electronically opening roof. The 718 Boxster GTS 4.0, as its name suggests, comes with a 4.0-liter engine which pushes out 394 horsepower, and unlike the models below it, it's a flat six, which any Porsche purist would drool over. More than just a flat-six engine, the 4.0-liter unit imbues the 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 with the soul of a Porsche, justifying its price tag and making it a worthy purchase. So, while the 718 Spyder RS might be the pinnacle of Boxster performance, the 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 offers a compelling blend of performance and affordability.
In the early 1990s, while on the verge of Bankruptcy, Porsche's visit to Japan showed the German automaker that there was a market for two-seat roadsters, an excellent example being the Mazda Miata/Eunos Roadster. So they immediately did something similar but with a twist, recalling design ideas from previous Porsche roadsters such as the 1970 Porsche 914. In 1993, the Porsche Boxster concept model was unveiled, and in 1996, the final model was put into production. The first Boxster GTS didn't arrive until 2014, topping the 981 Boxster model lineup with slightly aggressive styling and 325 horsepower, 15 horsepower more than the 3.4-litre flat-six used in the Boxster S. Underneath, Porsche revised the powertrain hence better handling. In 2016, the second iteration of the Boxster GTS was put into production at Porsche's plant in Stuttgart, Germany, but with a 4.0 name prefix signifying its engine displacement and also distinguishing it from other 982 (718) boxer models that were made with four-cylinder engines. How well does the Porsche 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 perform? Read on to find out.
The Porsche 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 gets its name from its engine, a 394 horsepower and 309 lb.ft 4.0-liter naturally aspirated flat-six engine driving the rear wheels via a 6-speed manual transmission or Porsche's 7-speed PDK transmission. With the manual transmission, acceleration to 60 mph from a standstill takes 4.3 seconds, and the top speed maxes out at 182 mph, which is more than the PDK's 178 mph top speed. However, the acceleration times in a Porsche 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 with a PDK transmission are less. 0-60 mph takes 4.3 seconds and 3.8 seconds with Porsche's Sport Chrono Package. The extra mass added by the two cylinders causes a slight weight increase, with the 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 tipping the scales at 3,097 pounds with the manual transmission and 3,163 pounds with the PDK transmission. This, however, does not significantly affect fuel economy as Porsche promises a combined 21 mpg and 23 mpg, with the PDK transmission offering slightly better fuel economy.
Like other Porsche 718 Boxster models, the Boxster GTS 4.0 remains unchanged for 2024. There's only a slight change in the 718 lineup, with Porsche discontinuing the Boxster T and adding a new Style Addition package for the 718 Boxster/Cayman. It features better exterior standard offerings, adding 20-inch wheels, a Ruby Star Neo paint color, and Porsche graphics on the doors and hood. In the interior, the Style Edition adds special floor mats with chalk-colored stitching, illuminated door sill plates, and Porsche logos embossed on the headrests.
As with other 718 Cayman and Boxster models, the Porsche 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 interior comes standard with black leather seats with Race-Tex seat centers, which offer a supportive and grippy feel. But if you prefer the comfort and luxury appeal of leather, Porsche has a wide range of leather accents to choose from on the configurator. And as you decide on the color palette, you can also change the seat and steering wheel design to suit your preferred taste or driving and comfort preferences. There are no rear seats like in Porsche 911 models, but this is compensated for by storage compartments in the front and rear, making the Porsche 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 one of the most practical sports cars. However, the storage compartment in the rear would have been larger if it hadn't been for the roof. It's nothing major to complain about, though. The feeling you get with the wind in your hair is enough to soothe the pain of not taking an extra set of golf clubs to the course.
Every once so often, the exterior design of the Porsche Boxster and Cayman is brought up. Sure, they are meant to be cheaper than the 911, but this doesn't prevent them from looking like proper sports cars. Luckily, Porsche's customization options allow you to customize the exterior to your liking as you would the interior. As standard, the Porsche 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 comes in white, but you can opt for Black, Guards Red or Racing Yellow without adding extra costs to the final build price. 20-inch 718 Sport wheels painted in Satin Black instead of 19-inch wheels also come as standard. These beautifully blend in with other blacked-out trims on the exterior, such as the roof compartment cover, air intake and plastic bits on the front and rear bumper, taking away that bland appeal owners complain about in base model Cayman and Boxster models.
Porsche's commitment to innovation shines in the Porsche 718 Boxster GTS 4.0, which offers advanced tech features that enhance the driving experience. From driver-assist features to the infotainment system, you get everything that makes every drive a bliss. Porsche's Communication Management 7.0-inch display is standard and comes equipped with satellite radio, Android Auto, navigation, and Apple CarPlay, among other essentials as standard, ensuring connectivity and convenience with every drive. Drive with confidence thanks to a suite of advanced safety and driver assist features like traction and stability control, four-wheel ABS, tire pressure monitoring and a post-collision safety system. Porsche also offers additional features, such as adaptive cruise control and Active Suspension Management, that further enhance the quality of every drive.
