Both the Porsche 911 and the Ferrari 488 are awesome sports cars with a good fan base around the world. But what if the two had a baby…and it was British? Then a McLaren 570S Spider would be that baby. When the company first set out to build the 570S, the goal wasn’t about making the fastest sportscar on the track though there is no denying that this thing is blindingly quick... it was to offer sport car fans something that yes could compete with the best of them and still be used as a daily driver. The 570S Spider is based on the coupe version. But the spider offers a whole new level of excitement. Let’s discover more about the Spider and why it harbors such appeal among sports car enthusiasts around the world. So, if you are ready, let’s dive straight in!
Let’s talk about how it moves. Speed may not have been the initial motivation but to say it is blindingly fast isn’t an overstatement. As for the McLaren 570S Spider 0-60, it will do it in under 3.2 seconds courtesy of the 3.8-liter V8 turbocharged engine that produces 562 hp. This is the same engine that you’ll find in the 570 coupe. While the speedometer reads a top speed of over 200mph, you are limited to about 196 mph with the top off. Still quite impressive no doubt. But it’s not all straight-line speeds with the 570S. Its greatest appeal is in the driving and handling. Compared with other sports cars you’ll instantly notice how responsive everything feels. From the steering to the braking and everything in between. The McLaren is about evoking emotions that you didn’t expect behind the steering wheel. It’s about connecting with the driver and making them one with the road…but in a good way. You can fine-tune your 570S McLaren to a variety of driving modes which also means varying levels of firmness. Yet you don’t have to as the standard settings will still provide you with a thrilling ride. And if you are thinking that such a small and low-riding car will have limited cabin space, you’d be wrong. The McLaren still offers a comfortable sitting position with the sports seats. Getting in and out of the McLaren is a breeze too. You also get to enjoy a 240-watt sound system from 4 speakers.
McLaren first introduced the 570S Spider in 2018 and still features the iconic open-top design thanks to a two-piece roof removable design. It weighed 101 pounds lighter than its coupe sister. You may argue that the coupe had more exterior color options but it was hardly anything to complain about. One year later in 2019, the new Spider was up for grabs though there was nothing different about the new model compared to the 2018 model. This is true for the 2020 model as McLaren saw no need to alter the design. As for the McLaren 570S Spider specs and trims, McLaren sought to sell the Spider as a standalone model so no trims were available. Which begs the question, is the 570S Spider the perfect sports car? Well, we are all grown enough to know there is no such thing as perfect and the spider does have its downfalls. For one the 2019 model got a recall due to some faulty airbags and braking issues. As for the McLaren 570S Spider cost, we're talking $208,800 for the 2020 model. If you opt to shop for your McLaren online, getting the right partner can help the buying process run smoothly. Exotic Car Trader excels at this and will help ensure your McLaren is delivered to you without any hitches or glitches.
Sure, there’s always the Porsche 911 line, or even a Ferrari 488. We are not saying the McLaren doesn’t have its rivals. But the ride quality will compete with the best of them, and often win. The Spider is not cheap of course but it is versatile. When you are in the mood for a little wild driving, the McLaren will deliver and during those days when you want to appreciate a quiet breezy ride back home, you can depend on the McLaren for that too. The car also does well on the gas. While competitors like the Porsche 911 are doing 21mpg on the highway, the Spider can do 26.6. Quite impressive with that 3.8-liter V8. Anyone would be forgiven for thinking that the open-top design would prompt McLaren to add more frame support consequently adding weight. However, the frame had a robust design so the Spider only became lighter without the roof. The chassis on the car weighs just 75 kg, a 46 kg difference from the 570 coupe. You can expect the open top to offer similar performance figures to the coupe as the same engine is used to propel the now 3314lb car. It’s no wonder the Spider accelerates so fast. The response on the gas pedal, brakes, and even steering is so fine-tuned that it makes you feel almost part of the machine. It is so immediate and responsive that driving is almost telepathic. Thanks to the Active Dynamics feature, you can choose between different driving modes. The normal mode is a blast, leaving you to imagine what the track mode will do. The track mode lets out the beast in the 570S giving you a thrill of a lifetime on the race tracks. On the flip side though, if you like to listen to the engine noise, which, let’s face it who wouldn’t after spending their money on a sports car, the Spider is trumped by the likes of the Ferrari 488 or the Audi R8 V10 engine.
We’ve used the word open top quite a decent amount, the truth is that only a small percentage of the roof folds away with the buttress section adding more aerodynamics. And if you want the wind in your hair, you don’t need to stop your McLaren Spider on the side of the road. Simply slow down and to 25mph and have the top fold away in only 15 seconds. While road noise, or the lack thereof, has been a hallmark of the McLaren Spider, things still won’t get too bad to the point of raising your voice while having a conversation with the roof folded away thanks to the wind deflectors. The only time you need to worry about the noise is when you reach highway speeds and even then, it’s not too bad.
The interior materials and stitching reflect the McLaren 570S Spider cost of the car and unlike in a Porsche, you won’t get any shortage of tech. You get the IRIS info system as standard which you can control via a 7-inch touch screen. The only downside is that you might need a bit of time to familiarize yourself with where all the controls are especially if it’s the first time using the info system. It could be the one thing that seems less user-friendly when you consider that the rest of the car is super easy to use. While you might notice the transmission moving between gears at extremely low speeds, it is seamless and smooth at higher speeds. The driving position is comfortable and the forward as well as rear visibility are great owing to the thin windscreen pillars.
There's no mistaking the McLaren 570S as a sports car no matter which angle you want to check it out from. The roof will open up in just 15 seconds giving the car a whole new stunning open-top look. Plus, it has some aero designs scattered around the exterior such as the front splitter, diffuser, and rear spoiler. And here’s some McLaren 570S Spider Specs. The car sits on 19-inch front wheels and 20-inch rear wheels all with the Pirelli P Zero Corsa Tires. The length from the front to back is some 178.3 inches with an 82.5-inch width and 47.3 inches of height. Overall, the car weighs 3314 pounds. As for the exterior color, you can get the car with up to 33 different color options from volcano orange to mantis green. You will not be looking to buy a McLaren 570S Spider if you are looking for practicality that’s for sure with just 5.3 cubic feet of space in the frunk and some extra 1.8 cubic feet in the tonneau if you want to pack some extra small stuff.
Cruising with the top down, stunning design, impressive McLaren 570S Spider 0-60 and awesome drive quality are just some of the things that instantly come to mind when you think of a Spider. So, if you have the chums, this is a great sportscar to have.
