Performance SUVs are usually the talk of the town if we're talking BMWs, Audis, and Range Rovers, but there's something irresistible about a massive luxury three-row SUV with more power than it should have. If you want something like that, you could go to the lot and get an Escalade V, or if you want something low-key, you could call Hennessey Performance and ask for an in-house tuned Chevrolet Suburban. Is the Suburban the best American SUV? Opinions for that may vary, but it definitely sits up there with the best. The only downside is that it isn't available from factory with as much power as some of its peers. It fits its role well, though, and as we've said, if you find it lacking in the performance department, you can always call Hennessey. Let's get into how much power the Hennessey Performance Chevrolet Suburban has.
The Hennessey Performance Chevrolet Suburban is based on the High Country trim level, which comes with a 420 horsepower and 460 lb.ft 6.2-liter naturally aspirated V8. Thanks to upgraded engine internals, a 3.0-liter supercharger, and supporting mods such as a high-flow intercooler system and a high-flow air induction system, the engine is tuned to make 650 horsepower and 658 lb.ft, hence the name HPE 650 Suburban. Hennessey also does chassis and dyno tuning and, as optional, offers performance wheels and brakes, which we'd definitely recommend considering the increase in power. The car's weight doesn't change much; hence, there's an improvement in acceleration numbers, with 0-60 mph estimated to take around 5.0 seconds. The top speed does change, though; even though it's not officially stated, it's likely around 150 mph.
Being based on the range-topping High Country trim. The Hennessey Chevrolet Suburban has an incredibly spacious and luxurious interior. There's enough seating space for seven as it has three rows each with enough inches of legroom and headroom. Amenities are plentiful, with first and second rows getting heated seats that are also electrically adjustable. However, only the front seats are ventilated and have a memory function. There's also tri-zone automatic climate control with split air conditioning for each row, excluding the third. But let's be honest, how often does that third row see use? The trunk space is spacious, as expected, and the best part is that it remains decently sized with all rows in use.
A windshield decal (optional) and a few discreet badges are all that distinguish the Hennessey Performance Chevrolet Suburban from the regular Suburban. We love it that way, though, as it retains the subtle suburban appeal that makes it so easy to underestimate. Even with the complementary performance wheels and brakes from Hennessey, there's no way you'd tell that it has 650 horsepower under the hood. However, it would be exciting to see Hennessey take on the Suburban RST for a more performance-oriented appeal, as it has a sportier aesthetic of all trim levels. Plus, it might be cheaper, considering it's further down the lineup.
Hennessey's attention is concentrated under the hood, so like the interior and the car's overall appeal, the Hennessey Suburban's tech suite remains untouched. Inside, you get a 10.2-inch central screen serving as the infotainment display, plus offering controls to a majority of the car's features. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are some of the features it incorporates, so you are guaranteed seamless phone connectivity. There's Bluetooth connectivity and an aux input as well. That's not the end. The instrument cluster is also a 10.2-inch screen, and second-row passengers get two 12.6-inch displays with access to mainstream streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu and YouTube. The 10-speaker Bose surround system is impressive as well, and even with the enhanced exhaust, you can enjoy every beat and note clearly.
A Hennessey Performance H650 Suburban has about $28,000 in upgrades. So when you add that to the car's roughly $80,000 MSRP (without options), buying one will set you back around $110,000. The Suburban High Country itself is already worth buying, so if you want more, the Hennessey surcharge is definitely worth it. Even though Hennessey has grown to become an independent car manufacturer, they are still very much in touch with their roots, tuning cars, including SUVs like the Chevrolet Suburban. If you're after an SUV that combines understated style with high performance and versatility, we don't see why it shouldn't be among the top options on your list.
