It came as a surprise when Brabus unveiled the 92R Smart EQ ForTwo Cabrio with more power, considering it's an EV. Their PowerXtra performance upgrade through a custom gateway results in a power output of 92 horsepower 133 lb.ft, 12 horsepower, and 15 lb.ft more than the Mercedes Smart ForTwo. Plus, the electric motor has a re-tuned torque control system and optimized modules for the driving dynamics and accelerator pedal. 0-60 mph takes 10.9 seconds, which is nowhere near impressive, but it's something. The top speed is limited to 81 mph, enough for sprinting between malls when running city errands and hopping on relatively fast traffic on the way home.
The Brabus 92R Smart EQ ForTwo Cabrio's interior remained mostly unchanged, but it's pretty obvious the materials used aren't Mercedes's. The seats are dappered in red Brabus leather and are quilted in an Ultimate Eclipse design, giving a similar in-cabin feel to the rest of Brabus' lineup. The convertible top has a similar red theme that extends to the steering wheel stitching, floor mats, and Brabus 92R badges scattered all over the interior. Seating space, of course, is only enough for two, and amenities are decent, including the essentials plus a little bit more.
Brabus doesn't just make cars' performance better; they turn them into visual masterpieces as well. Despite not being the best looking in their lineup, the Brabus 92R Smart EQ ForTwo Cabrio is proof of this, especially compared to the Mercedes Smart ForTwo. It has a more aggressive front fascia with three large air intakes, replacing the dull front bumper and giving the car a more appealing look. You wouldn't even tell if it's an EV. Mirroring the interior, red accents on the front lip and rocker panels enhance the car's visual appeal, and the exposed carbon fiber mirror caps give it a performance-oriented aesthetic. The rear end has a carbon diffuser, also with red accents and revised taillights that complete the dynamic appearance.
The Brabus 92R Smart EQ ForTwo Cabrio uses the 17kWh battery pack, unchanged from the Mercedes Smart ForTwo, which gives you a range of approximately 70 miles, enough for errands. Charging from low to 100% using a 22kWh fast charger takes around an hour, but a full charge on a 7kWh home power outlet will take about three hours, which is still decent. Inside, you get a 12V power adapter under the central armrest USB ports behind the cupholder. For entertainment, there's a decently equipped 8-inch LCD on the dash, featuring the essentials plus extras such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, surprisingly. Don't expect much in the driver assists and safety features suites though. Maybe the essentials and a little over that.
When new Brabus sold each of the 50 92R Smart EQ ForTwo Cabrios for nearly $60,000, which, to most, is a diabolical amount to spend on a city car with a body kit. It's almost similar to the Aston Martin Cygnet. Finding one of these units for sale today isn't easy, but if it's what you're looking to buy, expect to pay close to MSRP or even a premium due to its scarcity.
