Unlike many of BMW's other SUVs, the BMW X7 lineup was fairly limited in 2022 and remains so today, offering just the base X7 xDrive 40i and the X7 M50i as the range-topping model. There's the Alpina XB7, but that's on another level, offering more and beyond what's available for the X7, including the X7 M50i. It's a distinct offering altogether. We've reviewed several Alpina XB7 model years, so be sure to check those out. Let's shift our focus back to the BMW X7, particularly the 2022 X7 M50i. By now, the M in the name should be giving you an idea of what it has over the base model, the most obvious being a bigger engine, hence more power. But does this mean a sacrifice in other SUV essentials? Not at all. The 2022 BMW X7 M50i remains a three-row SUV with seating space for seven, the cabin has all the appointments befitting an SUV. But before we go further into the interior offerings, let's see what's under the hood.
Powering the 2022 BMW X7 M50i is a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 producing 523 horsepower and 553 lb.ft sent to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission. But the engine isn't the only upgrade over the base model. As standard, BMW used the Adaptive M suspension on the 2022 X7 M50i, which gives it a better ride and is customizable depending on driving preferences or the driving surface. But even in its firmest settings, it remains quite smooth, even in corners. The engine and suspension, complemented by a few other upgrades such as a retuned transmission, result in a 0-60 time of approximately 4.5 seconds, which is more than decent for a 5,300-pound SUV. The top speed is similar to most of BMW's offerings, maxing out at 155 mph.
As mentioned earlier, the 2022 BMW X7 M50i's cabin has all the appointments befitting an SUV. But if you were to enter in one right now, you'd feel like we undersold it by saying that, particularly if the leather has a coffee or ivory-white finish. But despite the finish on the leather, the way the contrasting colors and materials, like the aluminum accents on the dash, come together creates an undeniably luxurious ambiance. The front row obviously seats two, and surprisingly, so does the second row, as it has captain-style chairs. However, it can accommodate three when absolutely necessary, and the third row is easily accessible for additional seating. The only drawback is that the power-operated second-row seats can be slow. As for trunk space, it's as generous as you'd expect from a vehicle of this size, perfect for all your storage needs.
When approaching a car, you start getting ideas of what to expect based on the exterior, and boy, does the 2022 BMW X7 M50i make an excellent first impression. The front fascia stands out most, with a massive grille taking up most of the front bumper and is blacked out to exemplify the car's sportier character. In contrast, the 2022 X7 xDrive 40i has a chrome grille and front fascia elements. The headlights elevate the front end's appeal even further, particularly with the daytime running lights turned on. Moving to the side, you'll notice a similar design approach to the front end, as little to no chrome is used. The same applies to the rear end, and what stands out most is that it's tastefully designed without being overly aggressive.
The 2022 BMW X7 M50i, being a premium SUV, is thoroughly outfitted in all areas. Let's start with inside the cabin, where you get a 12.3-inch touchscreen iDrive infotainment display that's well-equipped and easy to use through gestures, touch, or the steering wheel mounted controls. The front and second-row passengers get heated, cooled, and ventilated seats, and in some units, you'll also find massaging seats for the first and second-row seats. The driver and front seat passengers have a memory function as well. In the driver assists and safety features suite, you get forward-collision warning, automated emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, plus more. These are, of course, in addition to the essentials such as ABS, stability control and tire pressure monitoring, just to mention a few.
