The only difference is that the 4.4-liter V8 in the former doesn't have twin turbochargers strapped onto it. So, how much power does the 2019 BMW X5 xDrive50i have, and how fast is it?
BMW has had several iterations of the 4.4-liter V8 for quite a while now, and the twin-turbocharged N63 V8, like the one in the 2019 BMW X5 xDrive50i, is among the best. It's not as powerful as the S63 in the X5 M and X5 M Competition, but it puts out a decent 456 horsepower and 479 lb.ft. Working with the 8-speed torque converter automatic transmission, 0-60 mph takes around 4.6 seconds, and the top speed maxes out at 155 mph. That might not seem fast enough, but it's quite something in a nearly 5,200-pound SUV. In Sport + mode, it doesn't even feel like it weighs that much, thanks to a sport-tuned suspension with adaptive dampers. Some examples even have the almost $4,000 Dynamic Handling package that includes rear-wheel-steering and active anti-roll bars, among other perks.
The 2019 BMW X5 xDrive50i's cabin is pleasing to be in. The seats are dappered in leather complemented by premium accents all over, from the aluminum and piano black accents on the dash to the soft-touch materials on the doors and everywhere else where you'd find hard plastics. Seating space is enough for five, but occasionally, you'll find some examples with third-row seating. It's less practical than a BMW X7's third row, but it works when needed. Plus, it only eats into the trunk space a little, leaving you with enough space for luggage, groceries, or whatever else you'd want to throw in. The second row is also foldable in case you need more cargo area.
Visually, the 2019 BMW X5 xDrive50i looks like any other X5, but that's not necessarily negative, especially if you prefer an understated yet premium appeal. It's only with the M Sport package that it looks sportier, with larger M wheels and less chrome, which gives it that luxurious character. Leading the way are the usual BMW design elements, such as the kidney grille, which received a major redesign from the previous generation X5. The car's stature is also bolder, with sharp lines that give it a more dynamic appeal.
Screens are everywhere in the 2019 BMW X5 xDrive 50i. In addition to the 12.3-inch digital cluster and a similarly sized infotainment display, you can also find two extra displays behind each front seat for the second-row occupants. All displays run on BMW's iDrive 7.0 system, which is super responsive and well-equipped, including Apple CarPlay as a subscription-based feature, navigation, traffic information display, and more. You can control the infotainment display through gesture, touch, or via the quintessential BMW center console-mounted rotary knob. In the safety and driver assists suite, expect features such as emergency braking, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, and more. There are, of course, others, such as a heads-up display and a 360° camera, which were optional, and the essentials, such as ABS, stability control, and traction control.
Even with SUVs becoming less popular, some of them, like the 2019 BMW X5 xDrive50i, are worth buying.
