In 2000, BMW presented the BMW X5 Le Mans at the 2000 Paris Motor Show. It was designed to showcase the performance potential of BMW's X5 platform with a 700-horsepower 6.0-liter V12 borrowed from the Le Mans-winning BMW V12 LMR. Though it was only a concept, it proved BMW's point, and its performance left the motoring scene wanting a performance-oriented X5. BMW answered with the X5 M, which they unveiled in 2009 at the New York Auto Show with a lot of goodies over the standard X5. Newer model years, including the 2017 BMW X5 M, are very much similar, donning more aggressive styling inside and out and the powertrain and drivetrain to match. So, how much horsepower does the 2017 BMW X5 M have?
Powering the 2017 BMW X5 M is the same twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 that BMW put in the very first X5 M. However, instead of 547 horsepower and 500 lb.ft, it makes 567 horsepower and 553 lb.ft. Now, that might seem a bit low for a nearly 6,000-pound SUV, but not the one we're talking about today. It does 0-60 mph in 3.8 seconds and tops out at 156 mph, similar to the first X5 M, despite being more powerful thanks to the weight increase. Performance aside, the 2017 BMW X5 M can keep up with the BMW M3 and hold its own against more dynamic M cars in nearly every dynamic measure. This is made possible by an M-tuned all-wheel-drive system, transmission, and suspension that, at first instance, will have you almost regretting the decision to buy due to ride stiffness, even in its softest setting.
The only drawback of the 2017 BMW X5 M's cabin is the 10.2-inch infotainment display, which lacks the visual appeal of a modern display. Other than that, the interior is well put together, from the dash to the center console and the seats. The buttons and knobs complement the overall feel inside. Plus, compared to screens, they feel more reliable and accessible. The same applies to the analog instrument cluster, which you rarely see in new cars. Facing it is a leather-wrapped steering wheel with aluminum-themed and carbon fiber inserts mirroring the aluminum accents, carbon fiber on the dash, and leather on the seats. The doors have a similar aesthetic, creating a uniform visual appeal that's quite easy to fall in love with.
BMW X5 Ms have always looked understated, and the 2017 X5 M is no exception. Its design speaks to its power and performance capabilities, though not in an obvious way. Only when closely observed are the sporty details apparent: a more muscular front and rear, pronounced wheel arches, larger M-specific wheels, and a lower stance. Enhancing the V8's presence, dual exhausts are positioned on either side of the rear bumper, a step up from the twin-exhaust setup found on lower-spec models. The front end doesn't differ much from other trims, but the vents are larger to enhance cooling, and the grille is finished in black to match other exterior elements like the window surrounds.
The 10.2-inch infotainment display we mentioned earlier might not include Apple CarPlay (unless paid for) or Android Auto, but it offers access to the car's important functions and features. For example, you can use it to adjust the car's driving modes or select any of them depending on how you feel like driving or what the road requires. These modes include Comfort, Sport, and Sport Plus, and each adjusts the throttle response, suspension dampers, transmission, and steering feel. Inside, you get a 16-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, two USB ports up front, and two 12-volt outlets in the rear. What more do you need? The safety and driver assist features are as expected for a high-performance SUV, including launch control, traction control, and electronics stability control, just to mention a few, in addition to the essentials.
In today's market, a 2017 BMW X5 M will set you back around $30,000, making it one of the best cars you can buy at that price point.
