Like the BMW M8, the BMW M6 is a superb grand tourer with all the qualities that give it that status. And looking back at its history, it has always been one ever since its debut in 1983. BMW briefly discontinued it in 1989, then brought it back in 2005, donning the highly cherished even though problematic S85 V10. Production continued for two more generations until 2019 when the whole 6 Series lineup was discontinued to pave the way for the M8, which would align with the premium price tag and competition. However, the M8, despite being a great car, hasn't been selling well, and according to statistics, it will most likely face a similar fate to the M6. But again, there have been rumors that BMW might bring back the M6. All that aside, let's get into what it's like to own a 2018 BMW M6.
It might be slightly older, but the 2018 BMW M6 looks good, and the best part is that it has the performance to match. Under its hood sits a 4.4 liter V8, which, when healthy, should make 560 horsepower and 500 lb.ft sent to the rear wheels via a 7-speed DCT or a 6-speed manual. We'd go for the latter considering BMW doesn't make V8-powered M cars with a manual transmission anymore, and there's not much of a weight difference with either transmission. Performance times aren't as impressive as the M8, but they are respectable for a car made over half a decade ago. 0-60 mph takes 4.1 seconds, comparable to some newer M cars, and the top speed maxes out at 155 mph. However, if you get an example with the M Driver's package you can push it to 190 mph.
BMWs have always had good interiors, and the 2018 BMW M6 is no exception. You'll first notice how well everything is put together, from the dashboard to the seats. What we love most are the front seats, which, despite being buckets, are surprisingly comfortable. BMW was even generous enough to include heating and 20-way power adjustability as standard, which for 2018, was pretty good. The dashboard layout is pleasingly ergonomic, and if you've been in newer cars recently, you'll appreciate the tactile buttons and switches and the analog instrument cluster. The leather on the seats extends to the lower half of the dash and the doors giving the cabin a cohesive appeal. Seating space is not the best in the rear, but there's enough room for short trips.
One thing you'll notice about the 2018 BMW M6 is its aggressive yet refined appeal, unlike the M8, which is more aggressive. However, it adopts a similar design architecture everywhere, and we wouldn't be wrong to say that BMW designed the M8 based on the M6. After all, both are grand tourers. The body flow is well proportioned with a long nose, a short cabin, and an even shorter rear end with muscular wheel arches adding to the rear's appeal. The coupe roofline sweeps beautifully towards the rear, and before sinking towards the rear bumper, it's accentuated by a subtle lip spoiler similar to what you'll see on the M8. Overall, the car's design showcases BMW's older design language that, compared to newer models, with the exception of a few, is preferable.
Regardless of its model year, the 2018 BMW M6 is loaded with features catering to everything from comfort and convenience to safety and driver assists. It even has soft-close doors, which aren't exciting anymore since they're on almost every car but are nice. In addition to that, you also get front and rear parking sensors, speed-sensitive and rain-detecting wipers, auto-leveling headlights, plus more as part of the convenience suite. Inside, you get a 10.3 infotainment display complete with Sirius XM, mobile hotspot internet access, real-time traffic display, and an MP3 player. Plus, it's connected to a 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system that sounds great, given the cabin's size. Lastly, driver assists and safety features include but are not limited to ABS, traction control, electronic stability control, and tire-specific pressure monitoring.
Prices for the 2018 BMW M6 average $40,000, which, if you pay for one, you'll not regret it. It's quick and stylish, plus considering that newer BMWs are more common on the road, the M6 retains a sense of individuality. Even with the M8 being the newer model, the BMW M6 continues to impress with its unique charm and character. There's nothing to dislike about it, and it provides a slightly older BMW driving experience that's especially enjoyable if you get one with a manual transmission.
