Based on the launches and discontinuations, it feels as if BMW is never sure about keeping the M6, which is currently not in production since the M8 took its nameplate. We say this because, like most enthusiasts, we wish they could keep making this fan-favorite grand tourer since it’s among the best BMW M cars ever made. In 2016, three years before it was discontinued permanently, or so we think, the M6 still maintained its high-performance status. How does it feel to drive?
BMW might not have designed the 2016 BMW M6 for the racetrack, but it sure has the DNA for it. Under the hood lies a 4.4-liter V8, a highly tunable S63 that makes 560 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque, which is maintained within a wide RPM range to ensure the car doesn't lose its will to keep going. It’s mated to either a seven-speed DCT or six-speed manual transmission for firing the power to the rear wheels. The six-speed is rare in newer BMW V8 cars, and it sheds some weight off the M6. The automatic is quicker though, doing 0-60 mph in around 4.1 seconds. But with both transmissions, the top speed maxes out at 155 mph when limited or 190 mph with the competition package. These are impressive numbers for a car weighing 4,515 lbs.
You don't buy an M car without knowing what to expect of the cabin or at least having an idea of what it looks like. BMW made the 2016 BMW M6 in three variations: a coupe, a Gran Coupe, and a convertible, all with different interior layouts. As a driver-centric cabin, the cockpit is exquisitely put together, with an ergonomic design seen in the angling of the dials and the driving position. These bucket seats are heated, furnished with leather, and have 20-way power adjustability for you to find the most comfortable seating position when driving. The same cannot be said for the backseats, where there’s limited legroom, as is the case for the trunk space.
The exterior design of the 2016 BMW M6 is not ambiguous, and it doesn't shy away from showing off its sporty character. Everything from the front fascia, side profile, and rear fascia has an aggressive profile. It’s nothing like the newer M8, but keep in mind that the car was made over a decade ago today. You’ll love the sleek kidney grille, LED headlights, yes LED in a 2016 M6, and the quad exhaust tips that bark like you’d expect. The coupe has a carbon fiber sloping roofline that matches the aerodynamic profile. Other exterior components like the side skirts, rear spoiler, and rear diffuser are also made of carbon fiber in some units.
What would you choose if you were tasked with deciding the technology to include in a high-performance car? As BMW did with the 2016 M6, most people would prioritize ride quality features such as the ability to downshift automatically when you approach a sharp corner. Adaptive dampers are standard for stability, which kicks in when you engage Sport or Sport+ driving modes. You still get the standard iDrive system for your 10.2-inch infotainment display with navigation and multimedia control support. Safety features, standard and optional, include ABS, ESC, forward collision warning, and traction control.
A number of owners don't like to let go of the M6, especially given that it’s a memento at this point. Those who want to sell their 2016 BMW M6s price them at roughly $30,000, which is fair considering what the car offers. If you’re interested in getting one, we have a few BMW M6 listings that you can browse alongside other used BMWs for sale.
