BMW marked the M5's 35th anniversary with a limited production model, unveiled in 2019 as the 2020 M5 Edition 35 Years, also known as the Edition 35 Jahre. Why celebrate the M5? Since its introduction in 1984, it has consistently been the super sedan it is today. It has evolved over the years, retaining the same qualities and making them even better. And looking at BMW's lineup today, the M5 has always been without flaws and major critiques like some of its siblings like the G8X, M3, and M4. Sure, the recently unveiled G90 M5 doesn't quite match its predecessors, but it's still early, and we know BMW has more to offer from it. Back to the 2020 BMW M5 Edition 35 Years now. Its production was limited to 350 units, all with the Jahre spec, which we'll cover its meaning in a bit. First, let's take a look at what's under the hood.
The base for the 2020 BMW M5 Edition 35 Years was the 2020 M5 Competition. This gives it a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 with 617 horsepower and 553 lb.ft mated to an 8-speed automatic dual-clutch transmission driving all four wheels through BMW's M xDrive all-wheel-drive system. Compared to the standard xDrive, the M xDrive is more performance-focused, hence the quicker 0-60 mph time, which, according to BMW, is 3.1 seconds, but in real life, it could be way less. The top speed maxes out at 189 mph as BMW included the M Driver's package as part of the standard equipment. We haven't seen any official weight figures, but given that the 2020 M5 Competition weighs around 4,600 pounds, the M5 Edition 35 Years weighs the same despite a few weight savings adjustments such as a lightweight M exhaust and a carbon swathed cabin, which we'll be covering next.
Inside, the 2020 BMW M5 Edition 35 Years is a world apart from its monochromatic black exterior. The first thing you'll notice is the gold-finished carbon on the center console and gold-themed aluminum on the dashboard and doors. And as you move your eyes through it, you'll notice M5 Edition 35 Years badging, unlike the exterior that doesn't have any badges. The seats are dappered in black leather with beige contrast stitching, which you won't find in the standard M5 and M5 Competition. The 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster might have been adopted on other M5s and BMW models, but it was first used in the 2020 M5 Edition 35 Years, complementing the 10.3-inch infotainment display.
Like other special limited production BMWs, one color was exclusive to the 2020 BMW M5 Edition 35 Years, Frozen Dark Grey II. The blacked-out theme extends across the exterior, featuring 20-inch black wheels, black or gold brake calipers, door mirror caps, window surrounds, lip spoiler, and rear diffuser. The front end carries a similar look, and it's hard to deny that black suits the car perfectly. To enhance its stealthy appearance, BMW chose not to include any identifying badges on the exterior, so there's no way to tell it's an Edition 35 Years M5. Whether that's good or bad depends on your taste, but we think it adds to the appeal. Throw some tint on the windows, and you could easily be mistaken for an undercover patrol car on the highway.
2020 saw BMW borrow technology, such as the electronically controlled shock absorbers, from the BMW M8 Gran Coupe to enhance drivability and handling in the BMW M5 Competition, which, as we mentioned earlier, is the base for the 2020 M5 Edition 35 Years. The chassis was also re-tuned for the same purpose, and it sits lower, enhancing the center of gravity and reducing body roll. Also part of the 2020 update were new headlights and taillights with a three-dimensional feel. Inside, the front seats are multifunctional, incorporating heating, electric adjustability, and a memory function. Driver assists and safety features to expect include but are not limited to forward collision warning, automated emergency braking, lane departure warning, ABS, stability control, traction control, and traction control.
Of the 350 2020 BMW M5 Edition 35 Years models produced, only 35 made it to the United States, making it quite a challenge to find one for sale. However, prices aren't as steep as the original MSRP, which was around $130,000. In August 2023, one sold on Bring a Trailer for $100,000, so if you're looking to buy one, you should be prepared to spend a similar amount.
