Ask anyone about their favorite BMW, and the BMW M3 is sure to be a popular response. Some will bring up the legendary E30 M3, the original that set the stone rolling. It's still one of the most coveted classic BMWs, admired not just by brand loyalists but across the entire car community. When the M3 sedan was introduced, it was an instant hit, proving BMW knew there was a market for it. And despite the M4 taking over as the coupe, we can't help but wish the M3 had continued in both forms. No offense to the M4 though; it's another masterpiece from BMW. 2017 saw BMW facelift the M3, but what else came with the facelift? Read on to find out.
One of the biggest changes for the 2017 BMW M3 is that BMW included an Adaptive M suspension as part of the standard equipment list. However, this only enhanced the car's handling but not acceleration due to a slight weight increase to 3,540 pounds. 0-60 takes around 4.1 seconds, and the top speed maxes out at an electronically limited 155 mph. All this is thanks to a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six sending 425 horsepower and 406 lb.ft to the rear wheels via a 6-speed manual transmission or a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic.
The only downside to owning a 2017 BMW M3 is that the interior may show some signs of wear due to the car being over five years old. Nonetheless, like newer model years, it's comfortable and has a performance aesthetic, which is hard not to love despite not being as plush. The seats are dappered in leather, extending to the mid-dash trimming, complementing the carbon fiber on the center console, doors, and steering wheel wrapped in Alcantara. As you'd expect for a sedan, seating space is excellent, with ample wiggle room for front and rear occupants. However, the driveshaft tunnel in the rear makes it hard for the middle passenger to stay comfortable during long drives.
There's something about an F80 M3 that makes you want to steal another look after seeing it once or twice, especially if it's finished in Yas Marina Blue Metallic, Sakhir Orange II Metallic, or Austin Yellow Metallic. The front fascia dramatically contributes to its appeal, especially considering what BMW did to the G80 M3. The same thing applies to the headlights, which incorporate some of the most stunning yet menacing daytime running lights you'll ever see. As you move towards the side profile, the low ride height and pronounced lines are aesthetically pleasing, and so is the rear end. What we love about it is that, just like the front, it's minimalistic yet aggressive.
As an older model, the 2017 BMW M3's tech can't quite match the latest BMWs, but it offers everything you need with a few extra perks. The infotainment display is an 8.8-inch centrally mounted screen running on BMW's iDrive 5.0, introduced as part of the 2017 refresh. It includes a radio, navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, audio streaming, and more. Sadly, there is no Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. On the upside, you get a 600-watt Harman Kardon sound system that sounds great. Convenience, safety, and driver assist features to expect include but are not limited to a trip computer, remote keyless entry, outside temperature gauge, tire pressure monitoring, an immobilizer, ABS, traction control, launch control, stability control, and more.
A 2017 BMW M3 will set you back between $40,000 and $45,000 on the highest side, depending on the car's spec, condition, mileage, and seller, among other factors.
