Recognizing the need for a mid-size coupe in their lineup, BMW unveiled the 4 Series in 2013. It was obvious that it was a direct coupe iteration of the 3 Series designed to offer a more engaging driving experience even in its base model configuration. Topping the range was the M4, a badge that had never before seen in BMW’s lineup and among the trims that have sat below it is the BMW 430i, which you can get with all-wheel-drive, for example, the 2020 BMW 430i xDrive. It’s obviously not fast, but how much power does it have, and how does it feel compared to its rear-wheel-drive iteration?
The 2020 BMW 430i xDrive's 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 engine is decent for a base trim. It makes 248 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, which is enough to allow the 3,574-lb coupe to hit 0-60 mph in 5.5 seconds and accelerate to a top speed of 155 mph. Decent, right? All-wheel-drive makes it more handling-focused than the rear-wheel-drive 430i, but the price you pay for that is that even though it’s rear-biased, the car doesn't feel playful as much. Another downside is that BMW has never offered xDrive with a manual transmission, and it’s no exception.
Coupes rarely appeal to people looking for practicality. First, having two doors means the cabin is not geared towards passenger comfort. Although the 2020 BMW 430i xDrive has a two-seater capacity at the back, headroom and legroom aren't that great. Also, the car’s width limits wiggle room, and it’s obvious that the rear windows don't open. Seating space aside, everything else from the seat material, ergonomics, and dial placement is mindfully designed. Cargo space is also sufficient for regular carry-ons.
Like other 4 Series trims, the 2020 BMW 430i xDrive shares most of its design cues with the F30 3 Series. However, the kidney grilles have a slightly more sculpted appearance compared to the early model years; the lines are sharper, and the overall presence is just a touch more athletic. Of course, it still maintained the signature coupe profile with sculpted lines throughout. It came standard with 18-inch wheels to complement the sporty profile, but examples that were optioned with the M Sport package have larger 19-inch M wheels similar to what you’d find on a 440i or an M4.
The 2020 BMW 430i xDrive might be a previous generation model, but it has everything you need plus extra. For example, it has an 8.8-inch infotainment display with a radio, audio streaming capabilities, SiriusXM, Bluetooth connectivity and USB audio connection, among other features. Apple CarPlay was optional, unlike Android Auto, which was introduced in 2021, so if it’s a priority, you’ll have to ensure the car has it before you buy. Some of the safety and driver assist features to expect include electronic stability control ABS, forward-collision warning, and automated emergency braking.
Prices for the 2020 BMW 430i xDrive range between $25,000 and $35,000, which is a decent price range. It’s not the fastest in the 4 Series lineup, but it gets the job done better than it needs to.
