In 2013, BMW launched the 328d, marking the debut of the first 3 Series diesel sedan in the U.S. It was the beginning of a new wave of diesel models, with the sedan's success in sales driven by its fuel economy and torque. Later, BMW introduced a wagon version, expanding the lineup. The only downside is that it didn't have the torque that would allow a trailer to be hitched for a fishing trip. Efficiency and power are the only major differences between the 2018 BMW 328d and its siblings. And those are enough reasons to buy one today. Plus, with BMW no longer producing 3 Series diesel models, this adds to its appeal. Once we take you through its performance, interior, overall design, and technology, we'll tell you how much you'll spend if you're considering buying one.
BMWs rarely feel dull behind the wheel, and the 2018 BMW 328d is no exception. But it’s not as engaging to drive as an M3. Powering it is a 180-horsepower and 280 lb. ft 2.0-liter TwinPower diesel four-cylinder engine mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. Consumption figures, which are guaranteed to be at around 40 mpg, are more important in a diesel, but if you want to know the performance numbers, 0-60 mph should take around 7.0 seconds, and the top speed maxes out at 143 mph. Weight is similar to other 2018 3 Series models, tipping the scales at roughly 3,700 pounds; hence, there's no major change in the overall driving experience given that the 328d is rear wheel drive. However, you can also get one with all-wheel-drive.
The 2018 BMW 328d's interior remains similar to that of other 3 Series trims. It's roomy, with enough space to accommodate five people, and it has excellent headroom and legroom in the front and rear. The only downside is the driveshaft running underneath the floor, which causes a bulge in the rear that might cause discomfort to the middle seat occupant. The amenities are decent, with the front row getting heated, the seats being multi-adjustable, and there being enough storage cubbies in the cabin, from the glovebox to the door pockets. The trunk is well-sized for a sedan in its class, and if you need more luggage space, the rear seats fold for that purpose.
Visually, the 2018 BMW 328d doesn't say that it's a diesel in any way. Should you de-badge it, it can easily pass for a 330i or any other regular 3 Series. The quintessential BMW design cues define the front fascia, such as the kidney grille flanked by LED headlights that incorporate the infamous "angel eyes" running lights. The rest of the body has a balanced, neutral flow that avoids being too aggressive or overly refined. However, BMW offered an M Sport package, adding larger M wheels, similar to those on the 340i, and a more aggressive front fascia with larger air vents.
Being one of the lower trims, the 2018 BMW 328d skips out on some of the features you'd expect. For example, it has a 6.5-inch infotainment display, which will feel outdated if you've been in a newer BMW. Some examples have an 8.8-inch touchscreen display, but it's still insufficient for today's standards. Both displays have navigation, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth connectivity, an aux input, SiriusXM, and vehicle function controls, just to mention a few. A positive aspect is that the standard 16-speaker Harman Kardon sound system is better than what you'll get in a lot of cars today. The driver assist and safety features list isn't as expansive, but it has everything you need, incorporating parking sensors, ABS, stability control, traction control, lane departure warning, and more.
The 2018 BMW 328d isn't a highly sought-after model, so its prices are relatively low. If you're in the market for one, expect to pay between $15,000 and $25,000 depending on the car's mileage, spec, and condition, among other factors. The 2018 BMW 328d delivers exceptional reliability and fuel efficiency. Plus, as a diesel, you're guaranteed that it's more durable. It's the perfect daily driver if your commutes are typically long or constantly on long road trips, as it's also comfortable to drive.
