At its launch in 2019, the GT was an odd duck in the beastly mean McLaren lineup. The grinning front offered a stark difference from the other mean scowls in the McLaren family. The GT was called the most aerodynamic car in the road cars portfolio because of its hammerhead front and extended rear. The GT was an attempt towards bringing the brand to the edges of mainstream driving, if not entirely into it. The idea was to offer a car jazzy enough to take on a supercar on a slow day but easy and spacious enough to drive every day. The success of the effort was debatable as the GT was not quite the touring car it tried to be. The new McLaren GTS coupe is a facelift of the GT and has improved its aspirations. The GTS will have the standard McLaren V8 engine but with 626 horsepower. It also has over 20 cubic feet for storing luggage and a genuinely comfortable interior, which is a big plus for any supercar. The GTS is enough of a supercar to make you enjoy the powerful engine and cozy interior while driving to work. Check this out if you want to know more about the McLaren GT.
The McLaren GTS has the same 4.0-liter V8 combustion engine that the GT and the 720S had. But this has been redesigned to generate more horsepower, and the GTS engine can boast 626 hp and 465 torque. The transmission is a standard 7-gear, and the acceleration is a jaw-clenching 3.1 seconds for 0-60 mpg. Most of the technical features are just like the GT it replaces. The car is lighter and becomes quicker than the GT at speeds above 124 mph, while its highest speed is 203 mph. Since the monocoque is lighter by about 20-something pounds, the car is slightly more lightweight and more responsive to the wheel. In keeping with the car maker’s aspirations to make the car a vehicle for daily use, it offers multiple driving modes. Comfort, Sport, and Track options are available through the Active Dynamics panel. The Sport and Track modes provide more rapid gear changes and prepare the suspension for higher-than-usual speeds. The suspension damping feature does its magic here, softening the controls to turn a racer into a cruiser. McLaren has focused on offering maximum visibility for precision steering in the GTS. The driver’s 360 vision is clear. The car comes with a nose lift feature that increases the car’s ground clearance from the usual 4.3 inches to 5.1 inches in four seconds, which is 50% quicker than the GT. The only feature that has not been improved or tweaked is the fuel economy, which is the same as the GT.
The GTS has an improved interior that assures comfort over long drives. The interior has upgraded upholstery materials that are specific to this model. There are leather seats, machine-polished aluminum switches, and glossy accents. The mood of the interior is super luxe. For those who want to enjoy the supercar side of the GTS, there is an option for the carbon fiber interior accents and a carbon fiber-based steering wheel clasp. The car has three new interior schemes. There are Nappa leather seats to go with the steering wheel cover. The car has two options for interiors. Performance comes with the plushy Aniline Leather and Alcantara, while the TechLux offers more conventional road cruiser interior options like powered seats and steering. The car offers multiple driving modes to suit the driver’s needs. The comfort mode will offer a quiet start option to avoid the loud exhaust. The sport or track modes offer enhanced driver input and deeper exhaust notes. All of these are customizable so that buyers can order a car with an interior and exterior that fits their specifications. The GTS has a digital instrument panel for driving controls, GPS, and an infotainment on the center control. The system runs the McLaren’s software and offers all the standard features. Some of the optional upgrades are available for additional charges. Some cool features, like a glazed glass panoramic roof instead of a hard top or the 12-speaker Bower and Wilkins sound system, are also optional.
McLaren GT supercars have a unique smiling front façade and comparatively longer rear end. The GTS just has nominal alterations from the GT. External changes to the McLaren GTS are so minimal that most people would miss them completely. The front bumper is new and slightly lower, with more prominent air intakes for cooling the jacked-up engine. The tail is also almost the same, except for larger air inlets, to let in more air for the engine. There are double exhaust outlets, and these can be switched to an optional louder and throatier sports exhaust. As usual for most supercars, the car has staggered wheel sizes, with the front tires 20 inches while the back ones are 21 inches. The rims are unique to the model and are available in multiple finishes. As suitable for a car that is trying to fit in as a supercar cruiser, the car has a surprising cargo capacity. The tail can hold almost 15 cubic feet, while the nose accommodates over 5 feet of cargo. Both spaces are easily accessible with power-operated gates with soft-close gates.
The car has little new technology, as the McLaren 2024 GTS is fitted with the same engine used in the GT and the 720S. It has, however, been tweaked for improvements. The GTS has a 4-liter, twin-turbo V8 with adapted phasing and ignition timing that generates 626 horsepower, making it almost 15 hp more robust than the GT. The body weight drops over 20 pounds, making the car slightly lighter and easier to drive. The transmission is also like the usual 7-speed versions used in the GT and 720S. The enhanced wind inlets in the front and rear allow for the engine to get more air to cool off. McLaren mentions that the car offers the best power-to-weight ratio amongst its peers.
The McLaren GTS and, previously, the GT were classed among a group of cars that included other exotic supercars like the Aston Martin DB12 Coupe, the Lamborghini Huracan, and the Ferrari Roma. The Roma is a proper sedan and costs over a quarter of a million dollars, while the other two models are also priced around $240,000 and upwards. The McLaren GTS seems much more worthwhile with its $210,000 starting price in the US. The pricing is compelling as the car offers a supercar experience combined with “ultimate usability” to quote the manufacturer. The incredible driving experience with superlight performance is an exhilarating combination.
